Fabienne remembers memories.
One--Boring, not at all. :)
I remember many actions that happened throughout my life. Sometimes it may be personal, sometimes on work life and sometimes marriage and child rearing. Sounds boring. but it is anything But!! Memories can be sad, mad, bad or glad but rarely dull
As a child growing up in a small, coal mining community, there was never much to do. No phone, no TV and no video games. OMG. what do we do in our free time? Ha! What free time? Dishes, laundry, sewing, cooking, cleaning, and I hate ironing. Forever piles of items to iron. I own an iron and two ironing boards, not sure where they are as I hate ironing.
We went outside to play and ride our bikes. The main thing I remember is walking beyond the spill piles of coal dust and laying on the dirt with crocuses all around me. I love the smell of crocuses. I would stare at the sky and dream of a future beyond the black dust from the mine. No matter what I did in my life, I was going to get away from the mine. I was going to get enough education and skill that would allow me to live in other places and allow me to travel.
By Grade three, I knew I was going to be a teacher. Women fifty years ago had a choice, teacher, nurse, secretary, store clerk or housewife. Since I couldn't handle blood or anything else that came out of the openings of the human body, teacher it was. I couldn't stand the way some of my teachers did manage unruly students. One teacher would pinch kids in the ears with their nails til they were bleeding. Another teacher would put a thumb tack on their thumb with scotch tape with the point, pointing outward. If someone was causing a disturbance, the teacher would come up behind them and poke them in the hair on their head. They settled down very quickly. Of course, if a student was really acting up, there was always the "strap". The last thing you wanted was a note home to the parents. Then you would really be in for it at home. Remember no phones, but you didn't dare not take the note home. I went through school with the same thirteen kids until I got bussed to the big school in the neighboring town in Grade eight.. The huge metropolis called Bienfait , Saskatchewan. I was there for three years and then we moved to the Big City. That's right, Regina, Saskatchewan.
I was on my way after Grade twelve to University, three degrees, teaching and counselling from Grades one to twelve, in three province for almost the next five decades. I loved my career, no regrets.
Til next time a memory comes to my head -Faith always
